The night was long but Labour won a huge victory in the early hours as Chris Webb is declared the new MP for Blackpool South
A community sports hall filled with cameras, rosettes, ballot boxes, clipboards and microphones can only mean one thing. It's election night.
"It is not acceptable that the Conservatives have allowed some parts of our town to be rundown, without a plan to rejuvenate them and it's not acceptable that in Blackpool South, in parts, more children live in poverty because of the decisions that this government have made. During his speech, Mr Webb had some live reaction from other candidates, as Independent Stephen Black could be seen tutting, shaking his head and even saying "rubbish" as he spoke to the room and electorate back home in the immediate aftermath of the win.
“This is the one contest where voters had the chance to send a message to Rishi Sunak’s Conservatives directly, and that message is an overwhelming vote for change. The swing towards the Labour Party in Blackpool South is truly historic and shows that we are firmly back in the service of working people.”
David Jones stood as Conservative Party candidate in the by-election - no easy feat considering the recent headlines, but he knew it wasn't going to be easy. Far from Mr Benton's previous majority, it appears his actions may have had a huge affect on the constituents. Today, the Conservative Party only managed 3,218 votes but Mr Jones somewhat expected the outcome.“I was the underdog with that and I’ve talked about being the underdog the whole way through it.
