Ukraine and Russia claimed on Saturday that hundreds of enemy troops were killed over the previous 24 hours in the fight for Bakhmut, with Kyiv fending off unabating attacks and a small river that bisects the town now marking the new front line.

Vladyslav, a Ukrainian paratrooper of the 80 Air Assault brigade, rests inside a dugout at the frontline near Bakhmut on Friday.Serhiy Cherevatyi, a Ukrainian military spokesperson, said 221 pro-Moscow troops were killed and more than 300 wounded in Bakhmut. Russia’s defence ministry said that up to 210 Ukrainian soldiers were killed in the broader Donetsk part of the frontline.

Both sides have admitted to suffering and inflicting significant losses in Bakhmut, while the exact number of casualties is difficult to independently verify. “It is necessary to gain time to accumulate reserves and start a counter-offensive, which is not far off,” the military cited Colonel general Oleksandr Syrskyi as saying on Saturday.Moscow says capturing Bakhmut would punch a hole in Ukrainian defences and be a step towards seizing all of the Donbas industrial region, a major target. Kyiv says the battle is grinding down Russia’s best units.

Ukraine’s fighting ‘spirit’ plays major role in war against Russia: Richard KempUkraine’s fighting ‘spirit’ plays major role in war against Russia: Richard KempFormer British commander Richard Kemp says the Ukrainian soldiers’ morale to fight plays a major part in the war, but the army needs greater military support in order to succeed. “You can have all the equipment you want, you can have all the ammunition you want, you can have all the tanks you want, but if you don’t have the fighting spirit to use them and go above and beyond, even at times when you know there is a very good chance you will die, then you are not going to do as well as the side who has that,” he told Sky News Australia. “On the one hand, we got Ukraine that does have that spirit, they are fighting for their lives, they are fighting for their men and women to their left and right. “The Russians on the other hand, they don’t really know what they are fighting for in many cases, they are just sent there.”

No chance for a ‘negotiated peace’ between Ukraine and RussiaNo chance for a ‘negotiated peace’ between Ukraine and RussiaFormer British commander Richard Kemp claims peace between Russia and Ukraine will only come from a decision on the battlefield, with one side winning the war. Mr Kemp said he doesn’t see any chance of a negotiated peace because both sides are “so far apart”. “Putin can’t possibly, let’s say, return to the pre-February 2022 lines in which he started the invasion,” he told Sky News Australia. “He can’t do that - he has lost so much of Russia, so many people killed, so much economic damage, so much isolation in the world; he has hugely damaged Russia, he has got to have something to show for it. “And on the other hand, Ukraine, President Zelensky has made it very clear he is not going to submit to Russia and is not going to assign to them any land they have taken in this war.”
