Ten people died when the bus Brett Andrew Button was driving crashed on the way home from a wedding. This week he is expected to receive a jail term, but not before hearing from dozens of the victims' family and friends and those who survived the crash.

Brett Andrew Button will face sentencing this week for 35 charges stemming from a bus crash that killed 10 people and injured 25.

Those loved ones were Nadene McBride and her daughter, Kyah, 22, of Singleton; Kane Symons, 21, from Tasmania; Andrew Scott, 35, and his wife, Lynan, 33, of Singleton; and Zach Bray, 29, from Byron Bay. Mothers, fathers, grandmothers and grandfathers, along with siblings, partners and friends, and the surviving victims will reflect on the night so many loved ones never came home.Button has never spoken publicly about the crash, but in March this year — through his solicitor — he said, "I am devastated by what has occurred and for that I'm truly and deeply sorry".Police facts outline one said, "He's going too fast," as another person said, "He's gone crazy.

Prosecutors concluded that "given the high concentration of Tramadol in the offender's system, his driving ability would have been impaired". He calculated "the tipping threshold to be 31kph at the entry to the roundabout," the police facts said.It was his admissions about the speed he was travelling and the opioid drugs in his system that gave rise to Button pleading guilty to a series of charges, including 10 counts of dangerous driving occasioning death.

In line with the law, Button will receive the standard 25 per cent discount on his sentence for guilty pleas.Button, through his barrister, asked to avoid being in court in person this week, and to appear via audio visual link.Instead, the former bus driver will be just metres away from grief-stricken families and friends who will tell him how his crimes changed their lives. The most serious offences he is guilty of — dangerous driving occasioning death — carries a maximum jail term of 10 years.
