Soon after arriving, Rebecca Macdonald knew she needed to 'find some Filipinos' to help her settle into her new home. At 78 years old, she is paying forward their kindness.
Rebecca Macdonald clearly remembers the culture shock of moving from the Philippines to Australia in the 1980s.
For the past 19 years, she has served as the president of FASHVI, volunteering her time as a way of paying it forward after the group helped her settle into life in Australia.Filipinos are one of the largest and fastest-growing culturally diverse groups in Australia. The group encourages Filipino people who are new to Australia to join, to help them not only find their community but understand how to get housing and employment."We give them advice and we can guide them where to go, places to ask for information and people who can help them," Ms Macdonald said.
When the company supported her to study to become an enrolled nurse she was the only Filipino in her class.
