The boy's mother told Guardian Australia he was not given his asthma puffer at the time
Footage from the Cairns watch house in January, seen by Guardian Australia and SBS The Feed, shows a First Nations teenage boy waking in an isolation cell struggling to breathe as he calls for help. He is one of two boys held in the isolation cell known as 'the box'. The footage was taken several hours after a blanket was allegedly set on fire by another inmate and then extinguished. After the alleged fire, the two boys were placed in isolation.
'I can't breathe,' the 15-year-old boy calls out. 'He's got asthma,' the other boy says. 'Well, if you can talk you sound like you're breathing OK,' an officer says, adding: 'Chill out for a bit and maybe have a bit of a sleep and you'll be all right.' The boy's mother told Guardian Australia he was not given his asthma puffer at the time.
