Independent senator Lidia Thorpe argued negotiations with individual First Nations clans is the key to financial compensation without sending “the country broke”.
Ms Thorpe flagged the possible reparations road map in a fiery National Press Club speech that called for a treaty and measures that would improve the lives of first peoples.she urged Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to scrap the Voice to Parliament which she labelled as a “tokenistic gestureOn the issue of reparations, Mr Thorpe said it should be up to each clan to decide how they’d like to be compensated, comparing it to local government structures.
“They [the voice] can't decide what that is for each clan and nation in this country. There has to be individual negotiations,” Ms Thorpe told reporters on Wednesday. She used her home state to illustrate a point about how much was owed to Indigenous clans, taking aim at Daniel Andrews and the “stolen sandstone” used to build Victoria’s Parliament House.
“You know, we don't want to send the country broke. I'll put that out there now. Otherwise, we could with what is owed.
