Unsurprisingly, right-wing critics and others in power have sought a scapegoat. They've tried toWhile it has predominantly been the Labor and Liberal parties who have had responsibility for fuel load management across Australia, there has been one Australian example where the Greens held the relevant ministerial portfolio for land management. That minister was me.

Back in 2016, a Climate Council report found that the direct effects of a three to four degree temperature increase in the ACT – and we are currently on track for that – could more than double fire frequency and increase fire intensity by 20 per cent. It found there had already been a 20 per cent increase in global fire seasons between 1978 and 2013.

Firefighting resources can no longer be shared between countries as effectively.
