The English exam was my first and most daunting exam on the timetable, and here are some things I wish I had known before walking into the examination room to sit the frightening three-hour exam.1: Preparation. Painful, but necessary
Writing English essays is painful. Physically and mentally. I had to use antibiotic cream on one of my fingers as they had swollen up so much from gripping onto pens. If you aren’t writing essays in timed conditions, you aren’t preparing yourself for the exam - there’s no way to avoid writing three essays in three hours. The more you write, the better. If writing a whole essay seems too much , then set a timer for five minutes and plan an essay using a past VCAA prompt. It may seem daunting, but my confidence increased with each essay I wrote, and each prompt I managed to plan.
Find time for things that make you happy – spend time with friends, watch your favourite show, go on a walk. Be sure you take care of yourself during this stressful time.Ensure you have a plan for exam day that leaves you feeling as calm as possible, and remember all of your preparation comes in the days and weeks beforehand.
