‘I think my son’s deadly’: How Gail Mabo and son William healed their relationship | GoodWeekendMag
Townsville artist Gail Mabo, 56, and the third of her seven children, dancer and didgeridoo player William Mabo, 29, share a famous family legacy, but it was both having triplets that really brought them closer.
When William was five, I used to call him Mr Have-a-Chat because if I was looking for him, I knew where he’d be: standing by the fence, having a chat with the man next door, asking about his greyhounds. He was very curious. As he got older, school got boring. He joined the navy at 17 and came out at 22. It was in the navy cultural dance troupe that he learnt Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island dancing.
“Later on, I realised: Abi-gail. I went, ‘Cha-ching!’ I had a little cry at home by myself, thinking, ‘Oh! They named one after me!’ ”
