How does tinned chilli taste these days, and which ones are the best? Northants Live reporter Matt Harris, also an ex-chef and now a passionate home cook, has taste-tested four tinned chilli brands - two supermarkets' own brands and two branded ones - and here's what he found.It's one of the oldest South American dishes, originating around the 16th century in Mexico and becoming popular in the Southern US.
The thing about cooking chilli is that it's incredibly fun, as the slightest change can make for a completely different taste, texture or both. But it requires very little prep and a lot of simmering - perfect to stick on and then leave while you watch The Chase. This is why I don't understand why anyone would buy this stuff tinned.
Anyway, here's what I thought about the tinned chilli that Tesco, Morrisons, Stagg and Princes had to offer. I also do feel as if a slightly fattier mince was used here, just because of the texture of the meat. It's cheaper than Tesco at £1.60, but didn't quite match up to it's competitor.Stagg What immediately struck me here is the replacement of the western style of mincemeat for perhaps the more traditional beef chunks.
