As a kid, Sam Walker’s father Ben dragged him along to watch Cameron Munster carve up the Queensland Cup. It was a rugby league lesson that stood him in good stead.
Roosters halfback Sam Walker can still remember being dragged around Brisbane as a kid to watch a teenage Cameron Munster light up the Queensland Cup.
So impressed was Walker senior after first laying eyes on Munster, in 2013, when his Central Queensland Capras were just pipped by the Jets, he made some discreet inquiries about getting him to join the Broncos. When there was little interest, Walker made a point of watching the cocky and tough left-footer whenever his busy schedule allowed him – and wanted Sam, then only in primary school, to get a first-hand look at future greatness.
“Dad always used to talk about Munster when he was first coming through Q-Cup, he had a massive rap on him, and he was definitely someone I also followed when he was coming through,” Walker said.“He was that off-the-cuff player, and I now try to play the same style – I like to play what I see. He’s mastered it after however many years, and it will be a huge challenge trying to stop him on Friday night, like it is every time we come up against him.
