Anne Fuller’s homestay has “a herd of shivering alpacas” after weeks of rain. “I only answered the phone as we have so many people cancelling – that’s been the other deluge.”

In October last year, NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet helped launch the $10 million “Feel New” advertising campaign to re-energise the nation’s biggest tourism state.

The farm has alpaca jackets as well, but bubble-wrap is the quickest, cheapest way to get the animals warm and dry. “Double bubble-wrapping is the best insulator there is,” Ms Fuller said, adding that a kind local had donated rolls of wrap.Ms Fuller estimates the farm has lost 70 per cent of its usual school holiday revenue over the past week; the holiday retreat rents out eight cabins priced from $300 a night, and the other revenue stream is the $25 fee per adult for day visits to the farm.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet meet SES volunteers in Richmond, on Sydney’s outskirts, on July 6.NSW leads the tourism pack by visitor volume and expenditure, clocking 33 million visitors in 2019, of which 4.2 million were international arrivals. For the 2019-20 financial year, tourism contributed $37.1 billion to the NSW economy and employed 256,100 people.

At least, as of Friday, things were finally improving going into the weekend, as the rain eased off. Ms Fuller said: “It’s been a wet and cold week, but we are a resilient community and our guests are wonderful. As he signalled the region was now moving into the clean-up and recovery phase, Hawkesbury Mayor Patrick Conolly urged residents to apply for federal and state“It’s hard for our community, having been through this again and again,” Mayor Conolly said.

More than 60,000 people remain displaced. “The claims for lost businesses and revenue tend to come in later, it’s always for homes first,” an ICA spokeswoman said.
