The NRL is powering ahead with its plans amid criticism from those outside the sport for looking to resume during the coronavirus pandemic.
Hawthorn AFL president and former Victorian premier Jeff Kennett joined the critics on Sunday, claiming the NRL was irresponsible and putting money ahead of player safety.
The NRL is basing the claim for its return on a letter from the NSW police minister, which confirmed the game could come back provided it offered a safe workplace for players and officials. And Solly, who has sat on NRL committees during the crisis, said criticism of the code was off the mark. "Some of the commentary has been ill-informed or misinformed," Solly told ABC Grandstand. "There is no way we are going to do anything to put our players or staff at risk."We're not going to do anything the government doesn't allow us to do or the medical or biosecurity experts don't recommend we do. So if we do start playing again it's because we have been cleared by the government to do so.

NRL season could go ahead for the “well-being of the athletes” | Sky News AustraliaSports commentator Jaslyn Hewitt says it is “a very interesting time to see what is actually going to happen with the NRL” as talks continue between the code’s heads and government officials to discuss the season resuming as early as May 28. \n\nOpposition leader Anthony Albanese said NRL clubs were allowed to begin making preparations to resume the competition weeks after it was suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic, however the season would not be going ahead without the approval of health officials. \n\nMs Hewitt told Sky News it was still unclear what the status of the NRL’s 2020 season was as “on one hand we’ve got Peter V’landy saying he’s got written approval from government authorities saying they can go ahead,' despite Mr Albanese’s announcement. \n\nShe said it was also important that the season go ahead for the “well-being of the athletes” as well as for financial reasons as “a lot of these players aren’t on the multi-million contract that we suspect a lot them are on”. \n\n“You have got a lot of players on a one salary income that are definitely keen to get back out there and I think you could see that from the reports of all the players on their Instagram and Twitter accounts when that news was announced last week,” she said. \n\nShe said players could also be at greater risk of injury if they rushed into playing competitive matches after weeks of breaking their usual training routines.
