Members of the police force and the public gathered to honour Constables Matthew Arnold and Rachel McCrow after they were killed in the line of duty. 9News
Other dignitaries also laid wreaths.
Palaszczuk said in a world filled with anger, division and ugliness, McCrow and Arnold were a force for good."There are no words that can heal this awful grief and crushing loss."Photos of the officers were on the side of the coffins as they were adorned by blue and while flowers, police hats and their formal uniforms.Arnold's close family friend Senior Sargeant Laura Harriss said the police force was a second family to the constable.
She read a letter written by Arnold in Year 12 which said: "I may be gone some day, soon perhaps, but just know that I will never leave you. I will cherish every moment we've had together in my heart forever".Harriss said his family knew from a young age he would dedicate his life to service."We knew from a young age that Matt would go on to dedicate his life to the service of others.
Commissioner Katrina Carroll said he excelled in all his studies, and moved through the ranks of the force quickly.8 of 21McCrow's colleague and friend Senior Constable Melissa Gibson and Constable Freddy Hartigan read a eulogy."Behind all of that was this cheeky larrikin, who loved a good prank and loved a good meme, often at our expense.""Rachel, you are truly the only person who could have brought us all together," he says.
"Rach, you spoke about your desire to work in child protection and youth justice. That would have been the first career step of many for you."Hartigan thanked McCrow's family for asking him to speak and said it was his greatest honour."We are struggling. but we will continue to tell your story.
