Less than 24 hours after Premier Gladys Berejiklian green-lighted Saturday’s planned protests, Treasurer Dominic Perrottet said the fact it was going ahead was 'indefensible' and 'ridiculous' | Rabe9
But former Australian prime minister Tony Abbott said if thousands of people were to be given the go-ahead to protest, they should also be allowed into stadiums to watch the football.
“You can’t go to the footy why on earth should 20,000 people be able to gather at Town Hall,” he told 2GB breakfast show host Ben Fordham. “People have been fined for living their lives and why on earth should 10,000 people be able to make merry on Town Hall steps breaking all the so-called health emergency rules.”Meanwhile, Police Minister David Elliott also voiced his concern over the protest, and warned that anyone who “plays up” during the planned rally would face the “full force” of the law.“These sort of people that [sic] are going to protest during pandemics don’t think like you and I, they’re not normal.
Mr Elliott added that even if the NSW government had moved to block the protest, it was likely the Supreme Court would have overturned the decision.“If the kid brings home a dose of coronavirus please don’t blame the NSW Police force because we’re not going to cop it.” The NSW Opposition has also criticised the government for allowing the protest to go ahead during a pandemic.
