Independents spark funding concern, call to inform the AEC | CroweDM
The federal government is urging people to tell authorities about independent candidates who will contest the election next year in a bid to force groups like Climate 200 and the “Voices of” movement to disclose the source of their funds.
Mr Holmes a Court said the move would have a “chilling effect” on non-government organisations but would not have any impact on Climate 200, which has reported its donations to the AEC in the past.as key campaigners in an email to MPs on Monday afternoon asking them to inform the AEC about new groups preparing to engage in the election.“In recent years, new entities have been established with the sole or dominant purpose of acting as political fundraising vehicles,” Mr Morton wrote.
The law also requires groups to register if they incur more than $250,000 in electoral expenditure in the current or any of the last three financial years. Mr Morton gave MPs the contact details at the AEC’s disclosure and compliance section so that they could report any campaigners. In another sign of the growing push for independents, the Voices of Boothby group named Jo Dyer, a key figure in accusations aired against former attorney-general Christian Porter this year, as its candidate for the marginal South Australian electorate.
