Indigenous Football Week, supported by A-League player Shadeene Evans, is highlighting a program creating change in remote communities.

This week is Indigenous Football Week, which highlights how soccer can create positive change for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in remote communities .

"I just remember all of us kids running around like crazy, barefoot in the long grass under the hot sun," Evans said.A proud Marra woman, Ms Evans was born and raised in Borroloola, about 970 kilometres south-east of Darwin. The JMF has a presence in several Indigenous communities in the remote NT, NSW and Queensland, including Borroloola, where it runs after-school activities for children to train and receive nutritious meals.

JMF program director Jamie Morriss said the initiative had helped improve school attendance, but more significantly, also health and well-being. "When kids play soccer here, they all come together, they enjoy it because we have the same problems as any other community in the Northern Territory," Samuel said.
