The Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers Association told members the first set of “token” industrial actions would occur before the end of August.
Industrial action will start at Qantas and budget offshoot Jetstar by the end of August amid an escalating fight over pay with its licensed engineers, but the union says it will start with “token” work bans to limit the disruption to passengers before ramping up to anything more serious.
Licensed engineers across the Qantas network have voted to start industrial action over a pay dispute., the federal secretary of the Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers Association, told members the first set of industrial action would occur before the end of August, but would only involve “token” one-minute work stoppages in an effort to show management that the union wants to bargain in good faith.
“We want to create a financial penalty for them to have to find alternative labour that we will offer that will be more expensive than paying people their single-time rate for their normal work.”Qantas and the union began negotiations over a new agreement for licensed engineers in 2019. This was paused during the pandemic and talks resumed in December, but the pair have been at loggerheads since.Talks over a new agreement for Jetstar and Network Aviation engineers recommenced in May.
