The recent increase in flies has taken social media by storm, with hundreds of videos documenting people swatting them away, from Bondi in Sydney's east to Riverwood in the city's southwest.

While they may be annoying, the insects are some of the most important pollinators in our ecosystem, contributing to the growth of dozens of fruits and veggies, including mangos, avocados and cacao.
