Vision of a fatal police shooting in Newcastle has been played in court on the first day of a coronial inquest.

The inquest was played the police body-worn camera vision, which shows a man lunging at police with a knife before one officer fires his gun. Warren Matthew Simon , 38, died after being shot during a police operation on April 6, 2023, in Bishopsgate Street, Wickham .Deputy State Coroner Kasey Pearce warned the court seeing the vision may be difficult to watch, particularly for Mr Simon's family and the officers involved.

When police arrived at the property, just before 8am, they saw Mr Simon asleep on the floor through a front window. After police told Mr Simon he was being arrested in relation to an alleged theft, he told the officers he understood and said he needed to collect his belongings from the home. One of the officers is heard on the vision saying, "You did the right thing ... you were completely justified ... we both have injuries."He had suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the chest.
