If anyone were able to wander in off the street, the Korongee village would seem both familiar and strange. The unique community is soon to open its doors to up to 96 residents who will all live with dementia.
If anyone were able to wander in off the street, the Korongee village in the northern Hobart suburb of Glenorchy would seem both familiar and strange.The Korongee village in Hobart was designed using dementia-inclusive principlesHouses, each a different colour and with a distinctively painted door, line four cul-de-sacs.Gently sloping paths lead to the houses, in which lighting mimics the cycles of the sun.
"The colour of the planters [outside homes], the type of tree, the type of cul-de-sac you're in, the colour of my front door, all of those things help to orientate to your home," she says. They will be matched using a typology system developed by researchers at the University of Tasmania that groups people with similar values."What this provides is something that hasn't been done before, I don't believe, which is bringing all of those elements together," she says.
