There were 713,000 international students living in Australia in February, but a corner has been turned as visa rejections pile up.
, but more than 50,000 hopefuls had their visas rejected, also an all-time high, in the three months to February.
International education is Australia’s fourth-largest export sector after iron ore, coal and natural gas. It was valued at around $50 billion in 2023.“The record number of students living here means there is a real danger of a knee-jerk reaction from the government in order to swing the pendulum quickly,” said Phil Honeywood, chief executive of the International Education Association of Australia.
The government’s current strategy of reducing the number of visas that are approved was having a knock-on effect in terms of a backlog of applications and rising appeals.
