Exclusive: Australians are watching increasing amounts of online porn, with mobile phones their preferred viewing device | smh_andrew

The consumption of pornography in Australia is rising rapidly, an analysis of online porn viewing has found, as the federal government considers face scans to confirm people’s ages before they view sexually explicit material.

The analysis of porn viewing habits by Paul Maginn, an associate professor of urban/regional planning at the University of Western Australia, found the majority of Australians use their mobile phone to watch online porn, including 59 per cent in Sydney and 57 per cent in Melbourne.

Dr Maginn also found subtle differences in the category of pornography viewed in Australia’s capital cities, with transgender among the most popular in Adelaide and Brisbane. Canberra was the only city where female friendly porn was among the most viewed.A self-described “sexademic”, Dr Maginn said his study of porn viewing was designed to generate evidence to inform policy-making.

Zahra Stardust, a teaching fellow in the University of NSW’s Law Faculty, said face scans could lead to governments or private companies maintaining databases of the profiles and sexual preferences of porn consumers.
