The arrests were made in last year's anti-government protests that swept the Islamic Republic. 9News

Iran announced on Monday that the country's supreme leader has pardoned 22,000 people arrested in the recent anti-government protests that swept the Islamic Republic. The statement by Iran's judiciary head Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejehi offered for the first time a glimpse of the full scope of the government's crackdown that followed the demonstrations over the September death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who had been detained by the country's morality police.

However, there's been no mass release of prisoners documented in recent days by Iranian media reports or activists. At least 530 people have been killed as authorities violently suppressed demonstrations, the group said. Iran has not offered a death toll for months.

Biden administration’s ‘weakness’ is emboldening tyrantsBiden administration’s ‘weakness’ is emboldening tyrantsFormer British commander Richard Kemp says he considers the US’ “catastrophic” withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021 to be the “approximate cause” of Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. “I think Putin saw America and then made the decision that he was happy to invade and did so,” Mr Kemp said. He said Iran and Saudi Arabia resuming diplomatic ties is another problem and has been brought about by President Joe Biden, who has “treated Saudi Arabia extremely badly” since he started his administration. “And at the same time he’s been doing his best to give Iran more and more power so I think that is another consequence of the weakness of the administration in Washington today.”
