The SUV costs from about $US62,000 in the US and aims to compete with BMW’s X3/iX3.

Late last year General Motors obtained Australian trademarks for the name and logo of the Cadillac Lyriq electric SUV. This doesn’t guarantee the iconic brand is finally coming to Australia nor that this particular model will be first if it does. But it certainly suggests serious consideration.

The Lyriq is something completely different: a sensibly sized, handsome, thoroughly modern EV built on a bespoke platform. And having visited GM in Detroit recently, I very much got the impression it’s the car designed to seriously market Cadillac to the rest of the world. Then again, that’s Cadillac, and that’s American luxury. Presumably it can be recalibrated for markets that prefer a Benz- or BMW-type ride/handling set-up.
