Riyadh Ato, an Iraqi immigrant who recently became an Australian citizen, expressed his deep appreciation for the country, highlighting the stark contrast between his previous life in war-torn Mosul and his current life in Australia. Ato, a Christian, fled the persecution and hardships of Iraq and found peace and opportunity in Australia.
On the day he became an Australian citizen, Iraq i immigrant Riyadh Ato could not think of a bad thing to say about the country he now calls home.
The couple, of Roxburgh Park, were among 165 people from 30 nations who pledged their loyalty to Australia and its people. Eritrea-born conferee, Samson Semere, said he was excited to become a citizen, including gaining the right to vote and have a passport.
