US terror attacks anniversary draws spotlight on success of Australian air marshalsTuesday marks 22 years since the largest terror attack in US history where strikes against the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon prompted Australia to boost its security by placing air marshals on flights. The attacks stipulated a dramatic increase in protective measures at airports and on aircraft as the Howard government introduced the Air Security Officer Program, requiring over 100 air marshals to be spread out over domestic and international flights. The expectation was for 10 per cent of flights to be manned by the air marshals with only the captain and the most senior cabin crewmember aware of their otherwise incognito rank. Taxpayers were made to reach into their pockets for more than $215 million, dating from 2001 to 2010 for the security program’s funding despite the protection measures recorded as only being used on one occasion. Over time, the scheme has been reduced and aviation experts claim they no longer play a crucial role in keeping Australian travellers safe, however, the exact number of air marshals deployed across Australian aircraft today remains confidential.
