Sydney superstar Isaac Heeney’s Brownlow Medal hopes appear dead in the water after he was unsuccessful in overturning a one-game suspension at the AFL tribunal. And Adelaide’s Izak Rankine also endured disappointment on Tuesday night after failing to reduce his four-match ban for a dangerous bump. Heeney will miss the Swans’ clash with North Melbourne on Saturday and is out of the running for the AFL ’s highest individual honour unless the club goes to the appeals board and is successful.
“’Intentional strike’ and we can’t be sure he wasn’t trying to hit his face ... Brownlows are a chance at immortality and the AFL has just stripped Isaac Heeney of that chance with no consistency to decisions barely a month ago,” they wrote. And another: “It’s quite alarming that a ‘swat’ can be given a week and upheld when challenged. Yet, intentional punches from Jesse Hogan and Zak Butters to opponents faces get thrown out. If the other two had been upheld, there would be much less uproar.
