Street art in Sydney University’s famed graffiti tunnel was exhibit A as Jewish groups stepped up their campaign to unseat the high-profile vice chancellor.

Already a subscriber? The graffiti tunnel off Manning Road at Sydney University has long been a symbol of free expression and protest.

The complaint to SafeWork NSW alleged that Scott and the university had failed to take proactive steps to manage psychosocial risks, including the environmental conditions of the workplace and ensuring a safe means of entering and exiting the workplace. The complaint included various pictures of the graffiti tunnel which, it argued, could be reasonably interpreted as a call for Jewish genocide.

“We assert that the university is a psychologically unsafe environment for Jewish staff and students, and we contend that the university ought to have taken steps to minimise this entirely foreseeable harm,” the SafeWork claim stated. This appeasement, in turn, fuelled further protest from Jewish groups and their supporters, claiming they had been sidelined in any resolution and left with no protections.

“How, I wondered, could an institution dedicated to the lofty ideals of learning and personal growth allow such a hostile environment to flourish unchecked,” wrote one Jewish student in a post on the Substack platform titled “Silenced Voices”. A former teacher and then staffer to NSW Liberal education minister Terry Metherell, Scott returned to education as secretary of the state department of education, where he had nearly 60,000 teachers under his management, running one of the biggest school systems in the world.
