Israel 's United Nations ambassador has vented his anger by shredding the charter, before the room voted in favour to support a bid for Palestine to become a member.
The UN Security Council will have the final say on membership, but the move will give Palestine more"rights and privileges" while being under observer status. Israel's UN ambassador Gilad Erdan was not happy ahead of the vote and argued the body were welcoming a"terror state" into the organisation. "Like many member states, Australia has been frustrated by the lack of progress. There is a role for the international community to build momentum, set expectations that parties resumed negotiations for tangible progress and to support efforts for a political process," he said after the vote.
The latest version of the Palestinian motion circulated by the United Arab Emirates is understood to have made vital concessions to the General Assembly, including no longer seeking to grant full UN membership to Palestine.
