Calls for support for eating disorders have tripled in Tasmania since the coronavirus pandemic hit, with one sufferer saying she relapsed to such an extent she was admitted to hospital.

InsideOut director Sarah Maguire said almost all of the core behaviours of an eating disorder — extreme restriction, body image concerns, purging and exercise — increased during the pandemic. "Sadly, wait lists when you're waiting for critical treatment for an eating disorder are not uncommon in our country."
"When you don't have services available, you're going to have people whose illness is allowed to progress without any input, and given all available evidence, are going to have worse outcomes."
