The father of a Newcastle teenager currently fighting for life in a Bali hospital has described his son's accident as a 'nightmare'. 9News
"But the hospital here has been tremendous."Mr Rankin said if his friends did not discover him in time he may have drowned."We've got a severe head wound and we're facing pneumonia. The concern is there's swelling on the brain."Mr Rankin suffered a brain haemorrhage, a lung infection from the water and a head wound that required 20 stitches.
To make matters worse, the 18-year-old didn't have an international licence required to ride a motorbike. This makes his travel insurance invalid."The bills are already over $30,000 for a few days in an international hospital and he may not be able to travel for weeks, so this will continue to rise," his family said.
"Once there is clearance to get him onto a plane, it's expected a Medevac flight to Sydney and transfers to Newcastle could be more than $100,000. Once home Lawson is likely to have a long journey of rehabilitation also." Mr Rankin just finished high school and is well known among the Newcastle rugby union and league communities.
