A distressing photo has been captured showing a dolphin calf entangled in a fishing line in Perth's Swan river.

Dr Delphine Chabanne, a marine biologist at Murdoch University's Centre for Sustainable Aquatic Ecosystems, monitors the small community of around 25 dolphins in the Swan Canning Estuary. The calf's injuries were first noticed in January. Inon Facebook yesterday, Parks and Wildlife Service, Western Australia, said while it had experienced staff and equipment to intervene and help entangled dolphins it was often a difficult task.

"Despite regular patrols of the Swan River … the dolphin has not recently been sighted by staff and no recent reports have been received from the community," Chabanne said pictures taken a few weeks ago showed a new fishing line was cutting a second gash into the calf's skin."There is very little hope for this dolphin at this stage," Chabanne said. The baby calf is still shadowing its mother. "Once the bone is infected, there's nothing you can do. The dolphin is going to die," she said.
