Their neighbour, Ron, had spent the night in a van. There was no refuge to be found in his single storey home.Around the corner, as the sun rose, we found Doug. He paddled towards us on a kayak after surveying his home in an even lower part of this suburb.Many of the residents in this neighbourhood had been through this before. But, still, they weren't prepared to live through it again.Locals are attempting to clean up excess floodwaters in Rocklea, Brisbane.
The devastating floods of 2011 were supposed to be a one-in-100-year-event . But now these families find themselves trapped in a dreadful cycle of loss and despair. Bookshelves, chairs, toys and family memories are piled up on footpaths destined for the tip. The awful smell of mud hangs over them. They're starting all over again, again.Thousands of homes have been deemed uninhabitable after the floods.
