The COVID-19 pandemic has devastated New York but, remarkably, it has become a secondary story in the nation amid violent protests sparked by the death of George Floyd.

While the US Open is not scheduled to begin until August 31, the health and safety risks posed to the world's tennis stars and their support staff has players questioning the validity of a return.Barty is one of those players. While excited to see tennis back in the headlines, the world No.1 has questions about the risks to both herself and her staff if the tournament goes ahead in seven weeks.

"It's exciting that tennis is being talked about again and things are moving in the right direction for us to start competing but I'd need to understand all of the information and advice from the WTA and the USTA before making a decision on the US events," Barty told theOne of the key questions some of Australia's top players have is the ambiguity around travel exemptions for their support staff.

While exemptions from a 14-day quarantine period are likely to be handed to the stars of the show, theBarty said the safety of her staff would be a critical part of her decision to either play or not play at Flushing Meadows.Rafael Nadal revealed on Friday he would not travel to New York in its current state."If you ask me today if I want to travel today to New York to play a tennis tournament, I will say no, I will not.
