There will also be fewer students inside the exam room than usual; within the public school system, no more than 75 desks will be allowed in any gym or hall, so nearby classrooms may have to be emptied and cleaned to accommodate the overflow.
They have also been asked to recruit extra exam supervisors at the NSW Education Standards Authority's expense, in case some get sick or if more rooms need supervising. Schools could call on staff – but not year 12 teachers – as a last resort. Craig Petersen, head of the Secondary Principals Council, said the system relied upon parents and students being responsible if they felt unwell."We need students and parents to be reassured they can keep kids home if they are sick. We have mechanisms in place to look after them," he said. "There might be pressure on students to go to school [such as], 'Just don't cough, no one will know.' We're relying on goodwill.
