The world darts championships in London loses one of its biggest drawcards, as Dutch three-time champion Michael van Gerwen is ruled out of the tournament after testing positive to COVID.

Due to his ranking, Van Gerwen received a bye into the round of 64, where he defeated Chas Barstow three sets to one, setting up the match with Dobey.Van Gerwen and countryman Vincent Van der Voort are in isolation at their London hotel after both men tested positive 24 hours apart."Of course our health is the most important thing, but you're here to win the tournament'', Van Gerwen said.
Van Gerwen said he dined with Van der Voort and another compatriot Dirk van Duijenvode at his manager's house on Christmas Eve.Van Gerwen criticised organisers for their COVID precautions.
