A 66.91m throw has made Kelsey-Lee Barber the first woman to defend a javelin world title, joining Cathy Freeman as the only Australians to go back-to-back
Javelin superstar Kelsey-Lee Barber has joined the great Cathy Freeman as the only Australians to successfully defend a world athletics title.
“About a month ago I nailed it down,” Barber said. “I was chatting to Mike and said ‘I can do this, I can win the world championship’. That self-belief just really drove my training and it didn’t falter form there.” “What I was able to do on the runway tonight was to put everything aside and just throw the javelin,” Barber said of her incredible victory. “I’ve said it multiple times, but that’s when my best comes. I prepared to be able to do that at these championships.”
Barber announced herself on the world stage age 17 when she won the javelin event at the Pacific School Games in Canberra. A decade later, the 30-year-old Barber has now won medals at each of her past three major championships - world gold in 2019 and 2022 and bronze at the Tokyo Olympics. Unfortunately, after being added to the 800m semi-finals, national record holder Catriona Bisset was unable to take advantage of her good fortune after being admitted to the next round following pushed to the track in her opening-round heat.
