Peter Bol was confident and assertive in controlling his heat for the 800 metres at the world athletics championships in Eugene, Oregon, winning easily to advance to the semi-finals.
“When I saw I was world No.3 coming into the championships, it was like ‘wow’,” Bol said. “You realise you are in a good place. Briton Matt Burgin, who had run the world’s fastest time this year, was a late withdrawal in Eugene, an injury that has opened up the field slightly for Bol’s assault on the podium.Kelsey-Lee Barber, the reigning world champion and Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist, qualified comfortably for the javelin final with her throw of 61.27m the fifth furthest of the heat. Mackenzie Little also advanced, with her 59.06m throw squeezing her into the last qualifying place.
As an intersex athlete, Semenya was banned from running any event between 400m and 1600m without artificially lowering her naturally occurring testosterone levels, which she had refused to do.
