Peter Bol breezes through to 800m semi-finals at world champs | mickgleeson

Peter Bol was confident and assertive in controlling his heat for the 800 metres at the world athletics championships in Eugene, Oregon, winning easily to advance to the semi-finals.

His time of 1:45.5 was only the ninth fastest on the day, but times are largely irrelevant in the heats unless you are outside the first three across the line. The first three runners in each heat automatically advance to the semi-finals, then the next six fastest times qualify. Marco Arop of Canada ran the quickest time in the heats with his 1:44.56 run.

Briton Matt Burgin, who had run the world’s fastest time this year, was a late withdrawal in Eugene, an injury that has opened up the field slightly for Bol’s assault on the podium.Meanwhile, Kelsey-Lee Barber, the reigning world champion and Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist, qualified comfortably for the javelin final with her throw of 61.27m the fifth furthest of the heat. Mackenzie Little also advanced, with her 59.06m throw squeezing her into the last qualifying place.

Sarah Carli was run out in her semi-final of the 400m hurdles, finishing seventh in a time of 55.57s.
