After nearly two months of sniffing and searching, Phillip Island Nature Parks has found and euthanased the predator of bandicoots and penguins that snuck onto the once fox-free island some time before May.
A two-month search for a fugitive fox on Phillip Island has ended with the trapping and euthanasing of the pest. The island was declared fox-free in 2017 before the fox was detected in MayA spokesman for Phillip Island Nature Parks, Stuart Murphy, said the fox was found trapped on the weekend. He said extensive monitoring of the fox over two months had lead to the result, but it was not yet known how much damage the predator had done.
"We don't know exactly but we'll be doing a full autopsy on the fox to look at stomach contents," he said. "We've had a few photos of the fox covering some fairly big areas, and through those areas there's numerous wildlife factors like the eastern barred bandicoot and little penguins that it had an opportunity to prey upon."Listen
