Jessica Walker grew up in the regional town of Yass, about 60km northwest of Canberra and was known as a vivacious, sporty young woman who loved people. But in the early 2000s, Jess began experiencing psychotic episodes, for which she needed help.
How the tragic death of Jessica Walker led her family to help others with the Hand to the Land initiative. She was initially admitted into a psychiatric ward for 30 days, only to be released eight days later. When Jess was discharged from the psychiatric ward and taken home, she was given just four days’ worth of medication, causing concern for her family. Then, one day in 2003, not long after she was released from hospital, Jess told her family she was going for a picnic.
