Jockeys Blake Spriggs and Beany Panya were involved in a serious fall during a race meeting at Moruya on Friday, leading to injuries and the abandonment of the final two races. Spriggs remains in critical condition, in an induced coma, and awaiting further assessment from a neurosurgeon. Panya, who sustained a fractured spine in two places and a head injury, has regained consciousness and is being monitored closely in the ICU.
Panya's twin sister and fellow jockey, Deanne, provided an update on Facebook, stating that Beany woke up around midnight and recognized her partner and friend, both fellow jockeys. While Beany does not remember the fall, she was able to ask questions and engage in conversation. Deanne also mentioned that Beany sustained fractures at T6 and T7 vertebrae. Initially treated at Moruya Hospital, Panya was later transferred to Canberra Hospital. Racing NSW released a statement on Saturday morning, confirming Panya's thoracic spine fracture, which may require surgery, and her head injury, which is not currently requiring surgical intervention. They also provided an update on Spriggs' condition, stating that he had been intubated with chest and abdominal injuries requiring surgery. Additionally, he has rib and clavicle fractures. Spriggs, a group 1-winning jockey based in Newcastle, had recently returned from suspension at the Moruya meeting
