UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson announces a new tiered lockdown system for the UK as the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, warns the city could be on high alert as soon as this week.
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has introduced a tiered lockdown system for local authorities in England, including shutting down pubs in the north-west city of Liverpool, as the country struggles to contain rising coronavirus infections.
"We must act to save lives," Mr Johnson said during a statement to the House of Commons, adding that he did not want another national lockdown and that he understood the frustrations of those struggling with the "repressions of liberty". On Monday the UK recorded 13,972 new coronavirus cases, with 50 additional deaths, taking the official death toll to 42,875.Health officials say the freshest data showed infections were rising across the north of England and in some more southerly areas too, while the virus was creeping up age bands towards the elderly from those aged 16-29 years.
