Billy Slater says a new generation of Queensland Origin stars is “only just getting started” after his decision to leave out former premiership-winning teammate Felise Kaufusi signalled a turnover of 77 Maroons appearances since winning last year’s shield., with recalls for Xavier Coates, Jeremiah Nanai and Moeaki Fotuaika ahead of next Wednesday’s bid for another series victory at Suncorp Stadium.
Nanai’s nod over 31-year-old Kaufusi - who would have not played for a month before game two through suspension - is the latest shift toward a slew of younger stars by Slater, and one hard to argue with given the North Queenslander’s superb 2022 Origin series. “I’d like to think we’re only getting started,” Slater said after naming a 19-man squad that also includes the Gold Coast’s AJ Brimson and uncapped Canberra firebrand Corey Horsburgh.
“Felise has done a fantastic job throughout his whole career, but in particular for this Maroon jersey,” he said.
