Expert Channel 7 commentator Kane Cornes says it’s time to dump the AFL ’s father-son rule. The long-standing rule is certainly one for the romantics and gives clubs first rights when drafting the sons of their former stars. In recent times it’s allowed Nick Daicos — the son of the legendary Peter — get to Collingwood, and both Will and Levi Ashcroft — the sons of triple-premiership player, Marcus — get to Brisbane.
“When heading into the draft, if you’ve got Pick 1, you’re getting the best player. “It would be more even. The game would be fairer.” There are some strings attached — such as the father has to have played 100 games for the club . The son obviously has to want to play for the club, too, which isn’t always the case . Also, a rival club can bid for a father-son player but clubs can use draft capital to match the bid and secure their player.
