Frontline services are warning Katherine women are among the 'least safe in the country' after the deaths of two women, and the hospitalisation of two others, in the past few months.

When a 19-year-old woman walked into a Katherine women's crisis centre four years ago, saying her partner had pushed her, Jo Gamble remembers feeling "so excited".She wants women to know that being pushed by their partner crosses the line and is "not okay".

If that same 19-year-old walked into the centre today, Ms Gamble says she'd likely have to be turned away. The NT has the worst domestic and family violence rates in Australia, with an intimate partner homicide rate seven times that of the national average. Siobhan Mackay, from the Katherine Women's Information and Legal Service , says Katherine women are some of the "least safe in the country"."If you're looking at how we can work to support Katherine women, we need to acknowledge that and we need the investment across all services," she says.

The average woman stays in the centre for about 10 days, but some women stay for months if they don't have a safe exit option. "Payback is a big thing and that does happen, and we do see women coming into the centre as a result of payback," she says.
