Tigers ready for challenge against Vandegrift in third straight trip to state...
The senior Mississippi State commit made a heroic effort last week during Katy’s 56-34 victory over C.E. King. He rushed for 241 yards and a career-high six touchdowns to help the Tigers keep pace and eventually pull away amid some defensive struggles. Katy has produced more than 6,000 yards of total offense this season, with nearly 4,600 of that coming on the ground.
“It’s been great,” said Davis, the reigning All-Greater Houston offensive player of the year. “I love the running game here. We always run the ball, and then we’ll hit a team with a play-action, and then Caleb will throw a touchdown pass. It’s awesome.” On the other side of the ball, the Katy defense will have a tough test as well. The Vipers have a dangerous weapon in receiver Miles Coleman, who has 1,420 yards and 12 scores this season. Vandegrift also has a 6-6, 315-pound offensive tackle in Ian Reed, who is committed to Clemson.
“Their size is a big challenge, and they’ve got pretty good speed, too,” Joseph said. “Their wide receiver’s caught 87 passes, so they can throw the ball around, and the quarterback in the reigning MVP of their district. They’ve got some good football players, and they’re a good football team. When you’re that well-coached across the offensive line, it makes it tough on anybody. We’re going to have to match up with them and get after it.
