NSW were in with a shot at victory before late errors ended their hopes in game one of the Women’s State of Origin.
It was an error-plagued night for the Sky Blues at CommBank Stadium, going down 18-10 to the Maroons in the Women’s State of Origin series opener after NSW co-captain Isabelle Kelly was taken to hospital with a throat injury.
“She is in hospital, she’s not great, there are concerns around her throat,” Sky Blues coach Kylie Hilder said after the game. The visitors went to the break ahead 10-6 and were quick to strike in the second-half. Queensland were fast to move on the ball, and a pass from Jesse Southwell at the back end of a Sky Blues’ set was intercepted by Shenae Ciesiolka, who took off up the field.Sky Blues’ debutante Jaime Chapman had an epic chase down, tackling Ciesiolka 20 metres short of the NSW line, but the Maroons shifted the ball out to the wings to score.
From the scrum Southwell drew in defenders and threw a little dummy out to the left. It was a master stroke from the Origin rookie and she offloaded to Emma Tonegato who flicked it across to Chapman on the wing to score. With that, NSW were back in the game, and started to string together some threatening sets. The Queensland barrage started early in the first-half, and they were first to draw blood after skipper Ali Brigginshaw shifted the ball out to the wing.
