The former Energy Security Board head says gas is the crucial transition fuel from coal to renewables as Australia charts its path to net zero emissions by 2050.
Kerry Schott is the former chairwoman of the Energy Security Board and a respected energy industry veteran. This is an edited transcript of her interview withKerry Schott: “I’m absolutely in favour of getting emissions down, but we have to get hydrogen in place before we can get rid of gas.
There are times in the electricity market we are running well over 50 per cent renewables and in some regions it’s over 70 per cent. You’d pay them to be available whether or not they are running. People have to just put up with that as the cost of transition until we have hydrogen in place. The other issue with it has been the Commonwealth’s previous antipathy towards emissions [reduction] means that argument about this just being about something to pay coal got a lot of oxygen in that milieu. And the Commonwealth was not in a position to be able to co-ordinate the states very well on the issue.
On the supply front, we need some way of getting more supply. Economists are always reluctant to put some aside domestically because it runs against the “everybody should pay the same price” argument. It’s like a subsidy, frankly.
